The City of Los Angeles Names 8/24 “Kobe Day”

Kobe Bryant day in Los Angeles.

The Los Angeles City Council immortalized the Laker legend by declaring August 24 his day. The day runs in accordance with “8” and “24”, numbers wore across his back during his career.

In a statement released by the LA City Council, Councilman Huizar said, “Among his astonishing list of accomplishments, Kobe Bryant’s 20-year career with the Los Angeles Lakers ranks him No. 1 all-time for NBA players who played for a single franchise, and ‘Kobe Bryant Day’ is the City of Los Angeles’ way of thanking him for his single-minded dedication to excellence, the fans and the entire City and region of Los Angeles.”

The reaction on Twitter was overwhelming:

Even Kobe himself tweeted about the event:

Bryant won five championships, multiple MVP honors, and scoring titles with the Lakers before announcing his retirement last year.

Some of his career highlights include his relationship with Shaq, hall of fame coach Phil Jackson, and an 81-point game in Toronto against the Raptors in January of 2006. The Lakers won 122-104 and Bryant’s game became the second best, individual scoring performance in the NBA’s history.
